A Call for Safer Chemicals to Protect Our Health and Our Environment
We, the undersigned, call for common-sense chemical policies in Washington State to ensure that only the safest chemicals are used in products, manufacturing, and agriculture.

Whereas:

  • Everyone has a right to a safe and healthy life, without exposures to toxic chemicals that threaten development and long-term health; and
  • Washington needs a healthy environment with thriving wildlife and clean air, water, soil, and food for all; and
  • It is vital to safeguard those most vulnerable to chemical exposures – pregnant women, infants, children, workers, and communities near industrial areas and waste sites; and
  • Safe and clean design of chemicals, materials, and products is good for businesses, workers, communities, and ecosystems; and
  • Using chemicals wisely will ensure a healthy legacy for future generations.

We support new approaches that will:

Make products safer by removing toxic chemicals

Phase out chemicals that can damage our health, build up in our bodies, or contaminate our environment.

Ensure that products are safe for consumers, workers, and wildlife.

Provide complete information on chemical ingredients and their toxicity

Test chemicals for safety before they are approved for use.

Require industries to fully disclose all ingredients in products and provide complete information about health effects of chemicals on people and wildlife.

Promote the use of safer alternatives

Encourage businesses to use preferred “green” chemicals, to develop safer alternatives to hazardous chemicals, to develop safer manufacturing processes, and to make safer products more widely available.

Reward innovative companies and support investments in “green” chemistry research and development to give Washington businesses a competitive edge in the global marketplace.
